Do I need to keep my resume under 1 page?

This is not true and never was true. It’s the most common myth we’ve heard over the years. Some people have many years of experience that won’t fit on a single page. We recommend that you use enough space to be sure and explain your experience. If you need to shorten it, we recommend limiting to 3 pages or less, in this case be more detailed with your recent 10 years

The best way to stand out is that your experience shows the match to the specific job you are applying for. Review the bullet points and requirements of the job and ensure your bullet points in your experience reflect the specific job. If you have bullet points that match the description it’s a good idea to move those bullets to the top of the experience. Resume Brander is designed to do this.

Regarding formatting and fancy background effects, If everyone makes their resume stand out differently, then which one stands out? That is the reality because almost all resumes are slightly different when it comes to formatting. This makes it confusing for recruiters and hiring managers when reviewing lots of resumes because they are looking for certain things. They spend much more time and effort trying to find where to find the information on each different resume. Now they are using AI tools to review resumes and match to the jobs. Also, most ATS systems simply convert the resume to plain text to index in the database once it is uploaded into the system.

Yes, we recommend listing your skills that you use most often more then once. You should have a skill list as well as list skills in the body of your job description in the bullets. Typically ATS systems will return search results based on number of times a keyword comes up, therefore someone could use the skill less then you but list it more on their resume and come up first ahead of you in a keyword search. We don’t recommend that you overuse it, but if it comes up in a search 3 or 4 or 5 times it will probably help you.

Yes, chronological order beginning with your most recent job first. It’s always good to list months as well as years. However if you are concerned about a gap between jobs than years is fine which should still get you a phone call and give you a chance to explain any gaps.

Make sure your resume matches the job description. You can do this by ensuring that your bullet points reflect what is listed on the job description bullet points. Also, make sure the relevent bullet points are at the top of your desctiption because that is what the hiring manager will see first and it will make an impact. Hiring managers are typically scanning a resume to find the match

ATS is an “Applicant Tracking System”. This is a system that recruiting agencies and employers use to upload and track resumes and activities related to the hiring process. These include Bullhorn, Greenhouse, Loxo, Recruiterflow and many more. They don’t really matter to you as a job seeker, except that you want your resume to be easily imported and easily searched in the future. Most of these systems use a parser software which will extract information from a resume and populate the ATS database so that recruiters can later search their ATS that is growing each day. Sometimes the parser software struggles with various formats of resumes – usually those based on images, tables, and other background effects. You will not likely know if this has happened to your resume. This is one of the reasons we recommend keeping your resume very simple and easy to read. Most recruiters will modify and remove your background effects and use their own style and template when presenting your resume to their clients, they refer to this as “submitting your resume”.

As Contingency/Agency recruiters our job is to present candidates to employers. We have been very successful working with hiring managers and Talent Acquisition teams at 100’s of companies. We get direct feedback about resumes all day every day. If you’ve been rejected or bypassed without explaination chances are we know the real reason. If you are experiencing these things reach out to us so we can help you.

Unfortunately it may be affecting your chances in some cases. We wish there was a better answser, and there is but this is best to discuss on an individual basis. Feel free to reach out and we will share ideas of dealing with this issue.

We do not recommend using “I” in your resume. It is not generally accepted. Instead of saying “I maintained the books and records” say  “Accurately updated books to ensure compliance….”

Resume Templates are really a matter of personal preference. We already carefully selected our resume template options for ATS compatability and for best results. You will have the ability to modify the entire template, however we do recommend sticking with our original formatting.

AI is being used to do this a lot. Our resume builder and brander uses AI to review your resume and the job description and suggests bullets that match the job but may be missing from your resume. Of course we don’t recommend adding anything that you don’t have experience with. However, removing unnessessary bullets and making sure what experience and skills you do have are listed on your resume will give you the best chance. Our resume tool is specifically designed for situations like this.

Yes, we can assist you with almost anything related to resumes, interviewing, negotiating an offer and much more. We are also adding more services such as employer introductions coming soon!

AI provides bullet point suggestions. Once you enter a job title AI will recognize your job title and make suggestions for bullet points that reflect expeirence related to the job title. Our AI bullets are suggested based on your other bullet points, so it will not duplicate existing bullet points.

You have many options available for resume writing services including us. We use our own resume builder to create your resume even if we are consulting with you. Over the years the number of jobs someone has during their life has changed a lot. Years ago working at a company for 30 years was very common.

In recent years it is acceptable to change jobs within 3 to 5 years. There are a lot of variations and factors that can impact this. Please reach out to us directly if you would like more info on this.

It is a very common format for resumes. Bullets are easier to read and to find specific experience overall.

Remember in most cases people are not “reading” your resume, they are tpically scanning through it for specific details that match what they are looking for.

Hiring Managers and Recruiters want to see where you worked, what you did and when you did it. Ideally they want to see what results you had in relation to your role as well as the skills you used.

Bullet points should explain the tasks you performed and if possible how it impacted the team and/or company. For example “Streamlined operations reducing the sales team’s workload by over 50 hours per week through automation of repetitive tasks using Zapier and Python scripting”
